TOPIC
The “Neue Welt” is an island which is totally surrounded by traffic flow. It marks a significant core-city-dilemma, being located at the interface of the dense inner city fabric and the fragmented peripheral areas: in the “Neue Welt” different scales, ideas and logics collide: regional infrastructure, a linear fragment of the traditional suburb, 20th century housing models, important educational and economic institutions, as well as small scaled, detached structures. Since two main regional roads come together, the place could potentially act as an important entrance to the city, but its actual state has little attractions to offer, neither on the level of programs, nor on the level of spatial qualities, including the topic of an attractive entrance node and interface for the car drivers. The city looks for urban and architectural strategies which develop an attractive gate for local dwellers, workers, and car drivers as well. As a kind of bilateral approach the island-condition should be explored as well as the possible interchanges of the “Neue Welt” with its surroundings (eg parking).
